Greetings all. I recently modified a Mercruiser 5.7 by adding and HEI distributor. I was able to get past the issues with vacuum advance due to the fact that I also installed an Edelbrock carburetor. I'm not really concerned with all the warnings about Marine quality Distributors versus automotive distributors And Marine carburetors versus Automotive carburetors.. My only question here has to do with the shift interrupter switch.. From what I can see the shift interrupter switch is simply a ground fault interrupter.. And does not control any positive electrical flow to the coil.. If anyone has any other information it is appreciated.

That's the most idiotic thing I have ever heard. Marine components don't exist because of quality differences - there are none. They exist because boats are different than automobiles. If you want to build a bomb, go away from this forum. While I can't speak for everyone else, for me, nice knowing you. Bye.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,.... Unfortunately, I doubt yer gonna get much help here to Kill yerself,....

Even with an auto's carb, the distributor don't see much vacuum, 'cause the throttle plates are always open at anything above idle,....

You are not just putting yourself at risk. Everyone on the water is at risk with that bomb you are building.

The switch grounds the neg side of the coil to interrupt the production of the spark to aid in shifting OUT OF Gear.
On newer electronic ignitions it interrupts the + 12 volt feed to the coil or ecm. ,it does not supply a ground.
If you do have a incident with automotive components you insurance is usually cancelled for any claim.

you created a bomb.... as in your boat will blow up.

you need a marine dizzy and a marine carb in a boat as they are engineered and certified for use in a bilge.

by installing an HEI dizzy, you not only made it dangerous, however you stepped back in time to 1974 for technology (nothing special about GM's HEI) and lost performance compared to the mercruiser dizzy. as for the automotive carb and vacuum advance, there is no vacuum on a fully loaded motor, so the vacuum advance wont do anything. the automotive carb will not have the correct calibration for a fully loaded engine, and it doesnt have J-tubes or the sealed throttle shafts so when you have a fuel leak, your GM HEI dizzy will ignite it and the ensuing 50' fire ball will take care of everyone within a 60' radius.

the problem is these boats usually explode at the dock taking out innocent bystanders.
