Mercruiser 5.0L two barrel Carb Leak?

Hi, I have been noticing that fuel consumption is above normal this season and at the same time I have a mild stalling problem when I increase throttle from idle. This is especially felt when the engine is still cold. In fact, if I try giving throttle immediately (after 3 mins idling from a cold start) the engine would easily stall. Yesterday I cleaned the flame arrester (it was full of soot), then I looked into the carb with the engine running (I think it was slightly above 1000 RPM) and I noticed droplets forming on one of the barrels. I don't think this is normal but stand to be corrected. Is this a leak in a gasket? Can I tighten the screws and see what happens?

Welcome
It's not leaking but does appear to be getting to much fuel. I would check the float level setting.

If engine was cold the choke should be more closed

That should be a fine spray coming out of the jet. I think you've got a clogged jet.

A dirty flame arrestor will cause it to run richer same as if the choke is stuck open...

Does the fuel drip off the booster at idle. Some where between 1200-2000 rpm the booster will start flowing fuel. I think on my GTO with Rochester 2bbl ( older brother of the mercarb) its is about 1800 rpm where the booster starts dropping fuel.

If it is doing it at idle this implies an issue with float/needle seat or too much fuel pressure. This would be dumping extra fuel in the engine.

I would look at your spark plugs as they are likely fouled. Clean or replace them.

If you are dribbling fuel from the bowl being too full this can cause stalling, also can be from clogged transition circuit. If fuel is dribbling of boosters at idle, you are probably looking at a carb rebuild but would be good to rule out excess fuel pressure. Have you changed the fuel filter?

That’s known as nozzle drip; I think a carb cleaning is needed to clear that up.
