MerCruiser 5.0 question

I am a first time boat buyer and am seriously considering buying a 2001 Maxum 2100SC from a local dealer. The boat has a 5.0 MerCruiser (260 hp) with 70 hours. When I was going over the boat, I checked the oil and found a very small amount of oil on the tip of the dip stick. Is this something to be concerned about? Is there anything else I should check on the motor prior to purchasing? I just want to be reassured that the boat motor was properly maintained and will last for years. Thanks for any help!

its hard to see the boat from here but since your buying the boat from a dealer there should be a service record and bills for motor and gear oil changes that should have been done each year

is the dealer willing to give you any type of warantee that that would cover things for at least 30 days

i would not by any boat without an on the water test drive of at least 30 minutes at high and low speeds its the only way you will know if you like the boat and it really runs well

tommays

price check

http://www.nadaguides.com/Values/Va...&Com=0985&Year=2001&Model=1600116325&Letter=M

I'd worry about lack of maintenence,If the previuos ownwner let the oil go that long with out checking, what else did he neglect?

Jim

Hmmm, that's a concern but maybe not as bad as it might seem. If it has only 70 hours on it and the previous owner wasn't very sharp with maint., I don't think 70 hours is enough time to cause a real problem.

Was the oil that you could see black or just a normal brown? If it's black, you can assume it was never even changed....run away.

If there are maint. records then you should be confident in buying it.

Running it a quart low is not gonna kill it over the short term.
