I have a 2003 5.0 mpi that i have been having MANY issues with.

From the start

Bought boat used..untested..below price. priced it for a rebuild if needed.

compression turned out to be good etc.

Boat would not start when i tried, Had mechanic come take a look on trailer, started right up for him, idled perfect, revved perfect ,pumped water etc.

Fast forward, i get it in the water, starts right up for a few days while i put it in the slip. Runs great up until around 2800 rpm- starts cutting out like i hit the key really fast- doesn't bog and die. Only bogs, slows the boat down, then gets right back up on plane. Boat continues to do this.

I bring to mechanic ( so i thought he was) He changes coil, distributor insides, crankshaft sensor? later Tells me its the ECM. Wants $2,000 for new one. I mail the ecm out to have tested , it turns out to be good. He checks fuel pressure he says , but only on trailer not under load.

I test drive it, still bogging and cutting out. Tried disconnect shift interrupter switch , kill switch on remote control. no good.

Fast forward to this week. Boat will not start at all now, i do not smell fuel down the throttle body, i dont THINK i smell it. MPI the fuel is injected in manifold so i cannot see it. Tried starting fluid, but had to spray, then walk to key and crank it. Not even a pop. not sure if fluid even made it.

Fuel pump buzzes, and seems to work. But perhaps its on its last leg? I connected a primer bulb to the fuel line. no start again.

Im at my whits end with this thing, im praying the fuel pressure test will read ZERO lol. Any advice??

:welcome: to iBoats.

Trying to diagnose an MPI engine using carburated engine techniques does not usually work out. Check to see if you are getting spark and also run a fuel rail pressure test, just to cover the basics.

In order to fully diagnose the issues, the engine will need to be connected to the diagnostic tool. The good mechanic shops should have them, or you can get the tools/software if you want to DIY.

Bump.. ordered fuel pump.. that’s all I can think of? When removing , not much fuel came out of the pump itself
