Mercruiser 5.0 Alpha One stalling when putting in gear

The 5.0 Alpha One is in a Bayliner 2452 classic. After I put it in the water whether cold or warm it stalls out when I put it in gear. I eventually get out there but not after much stress and stuggle. Out of the water it seems to run no problem when I'm cleaning it out it goes in and out of gear, no problem. Where should I start?

Assuming it's an Alpha type drive, it's time to replace the lower shift cable. Very common problem.

How about some engine and drive info, serial numbers would be best, even a year will help some. Type of boat it's in means nothing.

Alpha I Gen II, you need a new lower shift cable. To explain why, read this thread. HOW TO: How the Shift Interrupt system works?/ 288089

Thanks for narrowing down the problem for me. Do you know what this could cost to have fixed? Ball park would be nice, so I find a good mechaninc.
