This may sound relatively silly but I just completed an oil change on my 2003 Bayliner 205BR with the Mercruiser 5.0. When I completed, I noticed there are two oil caps. One cap on the left head cover and one on the right head cover. Being that this boat is fairly new to me, I didn't see the cap on the left and I added oil to the one on the right side. Please tell me it doesn't matter which side you add oil to. Also, I could only get approximately 4 quarts of oil to come out...that's including what came out of the filter. Does that sound correct?

Doesn't matter which oil cap you use to fill, they all drain to the sump. How did you remove the oil - thru one of those little 1/4" pumps thru the dipstick or just out the drain plug? If you used a pump thru the dipstick you probably did not get it all out. Was the engine up to operating temp? 4 qts is about right depending on how much was used by the engine and there is always some left in the filter even if you drain the filter.

Just one more note, the oil pressure needle always tends to be a bit past (right) of the middle mark...not sure why. Anyway, the oil mark on the dip stick was normal. I did use a pump that screws onto the dip stick tube. I ran the engine with muffs for approximately ten minutes to warm the oil prior to changing it. When replacing the old oil, I replaced it with approximately the same amount I took out...not the 4.5 or 5 quarts recommended.

Thanks for the reply
