When I try and start the motor I just hear a single click. Started happening about a week ago. I took off the starter and had it rebuilt and replaced the solenoid. Worked great for 2 days, now it's doing the exact same thing. Had the batteries tested, both good, and fully charged. Any ideas where to go from here??

Thanks!!

Re: Mercruiser 470 will not start

I had the same problem with my Merc 470. I did the entire tune up, the coil, the plugs, wires, cap and rotor, and the points. After finishing all of that stuff, i figured out that it was my circuit breaker and the fat red wire going to my solenoind. Check all of your connections and make sure they are clean.

Thanks! What was wrong with the circuit breaker?? The big red button, right?

yeah the big red button. i had to replace it. it was acting as a sort of intermittent breaker. it would stay in place sometimes and sometimes it would act as though it was popped.

Check ALL connections (both ends of the battery cables) as well as the breaker and main plug. Then adults only sticky at the top of the forum, number 2.

I checked and cleaned the connections including the main plug. Still just hear a single click at the new soleniod when I turn the key. The gauges move when the key is turned on but I don't have any lights, horn, radio, etc.

Checked all connections, they seem okay. With the key turned on I'm getting 12 volts at the starter (that was just rebuilt). Could it be bad again or maybe a bad wire somewhere?

sounds like bad wires somewhere...i also had to replace the big red wire from the back of the breaker going to the solenoid...check that. it runs through the middle of the motor and could possibly be grounding out.
