Have an '81 model 470. When turning engine over by hand, I noticed that the starter seemed to turn also. Upon removing and inspecting the starter it appeared that the geared hub of the Bendix mechanism is in constant contact with the ring gear(not retracting far enough after starting. It only moves about a quarter of an inch upon engagement). I dissassembled the starter and everything appears alright. The mechanism has a ratcheting device at its' base. Should there be more retraction or is the ratcheting hub supposed to remain in contact with the ring gear? There is about 1/4 inch of the spiral cut spline showing on the shaft with starter at rest. Any help appreciated!!
