There are 2 cooling systems correct? The coolant that I drained out of the reservoir is perfect, like the day it was put in. The water that cools the exhaust was a rusty brown colour. One of the coolant hoses, (the W/Pump discharge hose) had the metal coils in it but they were not in coil form, they were all collected up in one spot at the end of that hose. Is this a merc part or has it been replaced with an automotive hose?

Here are a few pics...

The hose and what I found inside of it....

The whole reason for this thread was to ask how to flush out the exhaust side to make sure there are no more metal bits floating around in there. Is there a diagram somewhere that explains how the cooling systems work in detail?
