Hi I am a newby to this site, and to boating in general. I purchased a 88 regal medallion bowrider at the beginning of the summer, it has the famous 470 merc in it. I got it running in less than a week and have been running it ever since (@ least 20 hours) the boats gas gauge didnt work so I had my electrical knowledgeable cousin trace the wire to the sending unit, hes good with wires and computers but does not know engines. He found the unit and proceeded to take off the sending unit and check it out. he figured out its not working and I need another. However in the process of finding that out he must have knocked some sort of debris into the gas tank, b/c there is definitely some sort of clog. It started out not too bad where if I drove over 4500 rpm it would start to choke out and tell me it was not getting gas, but the more I drove it the worse it got. It is now choking out b/w 2500 and 3000 rpm. I dont think its the fuel pump as the engine will turn on perfect, and it doesnt instantly happen, takes about 10 - 20 seconds before it will start choking, and if I pull back the throttle it will stay running fine, it only happens when the engine is at high throttle whether driving or just engine throttle. I think it has to be a clog of some sort. My questions are how would I find the clog, how would I remove it, could it be the fuel pump filter and how do you change it, could the clog be in the gas tank it self, also would upgrading to a inline filter help to avoid this happening in the future, and what else could it be making these problems all responses are helpful thanks

You could take off the fuel line at the carb and flow it to a jar while someone cranks the engine. If it flows strong the problem may be in the carb. Also the carb has a small fuel filter in it at the point the fuel line enters the carb. Check that filter.

I agree, start at the carb. If good flow there carb problems.
Do you have a fuel filter in line anywhere? If not consider mounting a fuel filt/water separation unit with a screw on filter. Easy to change.

Did he fix the gauge? Also check for bad ground. Or ground wire missing from battery, I missed this on my 84 Regal Medallion after remounting engine and had no fuel gauge, fan or bilge pump. Most of the rear electrics ground to the battery.
