mercruiser 470 engine ?

Just wanted to know some information about this motor (merc 470) some good points of it and some bad ones too. If anyone has any type of info on it it would be greatly appreciated.

I believe the merc 470 is a 3.7L straight 4 engine. There were made with hp ranging from 165 to 190. I believe that if you have a 2 barrel carb on it then you should have around 165hp. The engine is a long stroke engine which gives it good low end power. <br /><br />The motor is a very hard cold idling engine.<br /><br />The draw backs to the engine is the charging system. There is no alternator and the power comes from a stator on the end of the crank shaft. This part along with the voltage regulator are the weak point of the engine. The voltage regulator has coolant running through it which causes corrision and premature failure. <br /><br />Also the camshaft bearings go bad and the engine starts to leak coolant. <br /><br />Most merc 470 have a closed loop coolant system.<br /><br />In my opinion, which is bias because I own a 3.7L merc, this a great engine with enough power to pull a skiier and burns less gas than a v8.<br /><br />-Shawn

Besides what Shawn mentions,........<br /><br />They been Out of Production for nearly 20 Years now..............<br /><br />If you Haven't bought the boat Yet,............. Don't.....<br />You'll regret it later,......<br /><br />Commonality breeds More,+ Cheaper PARTS.........<br /><br />All boats Need Service,+ Repairs,..........<br />Look for something with a Chevy based motor,+ either a Merc. or Volvo outdrive,......<br />Where I live,.... Merc.s are 100 to 1 with Volvos,.....<br />I like Merc....... With Chevy Power...........

thanks guys for the information. I have not bought the boat yet just thought i would get some info from the experts first.
