Helping out with a friends boat. Don't have the engine serial number handy, but the boat is:
1990 Wellcraft Scarab 28ft. 454 OE engine. Raw water cooled
I'm sure someone has replaced the oil/ps cooler. Looking for any tips/write ups/gotcha's/ on replacement. Its located underneath the port side manifold. Doesn't look too terrible. We are both well versed in turning wrenches. Is it as easy as just taking the oil lines, ps hoses, and raw water hoses off and pulling her out? Appeared to only be about 4-6 bolts on straps holding it in. Pretty fair amount of room in the bilge to get to everything on this powerboat.
Quick bit of background on why we are replacing it if anyone wants to chime in. Boat is losing oil. Could be up to a quart a day if the boat was ran near WOT a lot after a long full day on the water. EDIT: It doesn't always use this much oil. It just depends on how long it's running and RPMs. Sometimes can head out for a weekend and just top it off after if it were short runs/lower RPMs
Engine is not smoking at all. To me, that rules out excessive blow by, valve seals, most anything engine related or it would smoke A LOT. No smoke whatsoever at any time. Bilge is super clean and white. No signs of a leak anywhere.
I've read a handful of times that big blocks will experience internal oil cooler failure and start pushing oil into the raw water system which eventually is exiting out the back. Will push more oil out at WOT due to increased pressure, which we wouldn't necessarily see headed down the lake at 45-50+ mph.
Boat is great shape. Super clean. Appears well maintained, but she is a 1990 and seems like she's starting to show her age a bit. Plans are in the works for a possible engine rebuild over the winter, which would get a new oil cooler anyway. So, he ordered one up hoping this might fix the oil loss issue for the rest of the season and get it back in the water for a couple more months.
