Hey everyone,

this is my first post and im looking for some help with a couple maintenance things.

We have a 1999 VIP Vindicator. It has a 454 Mag MPI Mercruiser engine. I don't know a lot about BOAT care engine wise but im not a stranger to doing things my self and am pretty handy.

We've had our boat for a year now and its time for an oil change and impeller change.

So heres what the previous owner told us.....

he advised using a synthetic 5w-30 oil for the motor and said its 6-8 quarts. A marine shop however said that a 20w or 30w would be better especially since its an older boat, and that synthetic isn't necessary since the boat is older.

As far as changing it we've been told to use a hand pump to pump out the old oil through where the dip stick goes in and then to replace it with fresh.

OUTBOARD:

For outboard oil we've been told to use 90w oil. The marine shop said there are 2 drain plugs...that we have to open up both and drain the oil then PUMP in 3 fresh quarts.

IMPELLER:

for the impeller...I'm clueless as to how to get to it. We've been told its on the engine but have no idea where. We were told to replace the housing AND impeller...so we bought both.

Soooo, does anyone have any experience with this particular motor and can i get some step by step tips on how to do this. I don't want to drop the $500 for a marine shop to do it so...help would be appreciated. Also if any other yearly maintenance should be done please fill me in! It has low hours (about 115) and doesn't get run hard.

Thanks for the help

Here is fuel and oil information directly from Mercruiser.

It's called a sterndrive, or outdrive, not an outboard.
this is an outboard.

You should find it on the port side of your engine and is driven by a belt. It will have 2 hoses on the back of the pump. both are normally 1-1/4 or 1-1/2" ID hose.

Here are links to the OEM service manuals you can download for free.

Re: Mercruiser 454 Mag MPI Impeller Change...need help

Ok so far Ive read that the oil needs to be warm in order to remove it and that i need to run the motor to get it warm...it is out of the water...and i THINK there is some way to connect a hose to it in order to run the motor but i have no idea where to connect the hose to and how to do this the SAFEST way (dont wanna burn up the motor)....any suggestions?

Yes, you can use muffs on the sterndrive.

Watch this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVdTmSTkBvc&feature=related

Just a note, the one making the video is a member here. Friscoboater.
He also has some good alignment videos.

Very nice...was nice to see how that works lol. Only thing is today is Sunday, I dont have muffs and all marine shops are closed...and I'd like to get the boat back into storage (its on the street infront of our house right now) tomorrow because the day after is garbage day...and i do NOT want the boat sitting out there when he comes by...know what i mean?

So...i know it will be slower but...can i drain the oil without warming the motor...not sure if it matters but its about 105 degrees outside so at least its somewhat hot lol.

Sorry for all the newbie questions, but id rather do my homework and do it right than screw it up and have a big mess on my hands...hope you don't mind :).

Also, i can't find in the manuals so far how to remove the prop...it says the drain screw is to be accessed by removing the prop..but all it says is 'remove prop' lol...i have a Bravo I. Is it just a nut in the center of the prop or is there more to it?

Re: Mercruiser 454 Mag MPI Impeller Change...need help

Ok i think I've read up on everything that i need...can you tell me if this sounds right..

Engine Oil Change:

Pretty straight forward...pump out old oil through oil dip stick tube...remove oil filter
Replace oil filter
Add new oil

Sterndrive Oil Change:

PUT STERNDRIVE DOWN first
Remove Prop (still not positive on how to do it other than just take center nut off?)
Remove lower drain screw and let some oil drain...check for discoloration etc
Remover Upper Screw (vent screw) and allow all oil to drain (about 3 qrts)
Use oil pump..attach it to the lower drain hole and pump oil in till it comes out of the top vent screw
Put top vent screw back in....then continue to pump until oil reaches 'operating' line on the "Gear Lube Monitor" located in with the engine
Remove the pump and put the screw back into the drain hole

IMPELLER:

So far it looks like i remove the 2 hoses you described in your first post
Then remove the bolts from the 'pump body' i think the manual called it
Take out body and impeller...then replace with new impeller and body...looks like i have to 'twist' the new impeller into the new body from what the manual said

So any thoughts/feedback/cautions?
