Mercruiser 305. Water in cylinder.

One day on the water the boat starting missing and would only get on plane occasionally, but had this terrible tapping coming from the driver side of the engine. Sounded like a lifter tapping. Got it in the shop and pulled the valve cover to make sure the rockers were not working their way loose. All was good. Put everything back together and checked the compression next. The second spark plug I pulled I noticed had water on it. So we turned the engine over and it shot probably a cup altogether of water out of the spark plug hole. My first thought is head gasket or cracked head. This cylinder had around 125 psi. The first cylinder I checked had about 135. After finding the water I didn’t go any further. Is there something else I need to look for? I’ve read some stuff about possibly the exhaust manifold. There is no water in the oil and it doesn’t get hot. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

New to you boat, or have you had it for a while?

Almost never the head gasket. Usually rust thru, freeze damaged, exhaust manifolds, or carrying too much weight

How was it winterized?

125 is low. For reference, a new motor is 150

However it could be your gauge is off

Regarding the water in the cylinder. Which cylinder? 7 and 8? 3,4,5, or 6?

Spray oil in the cylinder, recheck all cylinders for compression

A leak down test will tell you where the problem lies.

Thank you. It is actually a friends boat and it was cylinder 6. He has used it all summer and it just started acting up over 4th of July weekend so I don’t think it’s freeze damage.

And very possibly the gauge is off. It is rather old.

I'm leaning towards bad riser gasket or too much weight in the boat. (Could be cargo, could be water soaked flotation foam)

Measure the SWL to riser dimension. Should be 14"+

Do the leak down test. May want to pull the elbows and inspect the flappers

culprits are riser, riser extention (if equipped) manifold . A miss like that iw definitely water intrusion
