Thought I'd share some info I found when repairing my 1990 3.7L Mercruiser Power Steering pump. I spent quite a while researching and had to piece together info to get this job done and in the end found the instructions in the box for the new pump. If I had these instructions, my research would have been a lot quicker.

Anyway, my pain is your gain. Just sharing so that others can benefit.

If you have a power steering pump that looks like the one in this picture, it's a Saginaw style and is very simple to fix with re-manufactured pump from your local auto parts store for under $50 instead of buying used/salvage or rebuilt from Mercruiser.

The Pump Assembly in the picture is Mercruiser Part 7840008. Pump assy consists of the mounting bracket, reservoir, PUMP and some hardware (bolts). Yours may look similar, but require a different pump.

The pump is the round deelybob inside the reservoir and comes out with some light encouragement if you follow these instructions.

Or just search for Saginaw instructions 220129.

When you take out the pump, look on the casting for a seven digit number. Go to your auto parts store and they should be able to cross reference for you.

This one was a Duralast 7272 (at Autozone) and had # 7380247 on the casting. Other numbers that looked like they would cross, were NAPA PS 385136 and Cardone 20-661. Pics on the parts store website had the same housing number.

Hope this makes your job easier. If this helps, please post a reply. I take from the internet more than I give back, so hopefully this balances some Karma.

Good day!

Mike

Agree and this works grate if you DO NOT get a pressure relief valve with your new pump. I replaced mine in this fashion but mine came with a new relief valve. So in not knowing I ordered a standard GM Saginaw pump and it came with a relief valve. Reinstalled pump with new valve and it did work but as speed increased it was harder to steer.

After finding out that auto pumps use lower pressures then boat pumps, and having thrown out my old pump to a recycler, I had to buy a new Merc pump to get the valve. My learning curve, if I would have just kept the old valve

D'oh!!!

It came with a pressure relief valve and the old one is...well, i guess i could see if it's in the trash at home. Otherwise it's on it's way with the core. Well, it worked great in the driveway. Guess I'll find out.

Yeehaw. Went to Autozone and they still had the box with pump core and valve. Now to find a seal kit. Nbd.

Thanks for pointing out the marine vs auto valve difference!!!

Mike.

Where is the pressure relief located? Is it what Rock Auto calls "control valve" and spring?
