Yes you can leave the stator off, but do remove all the magnets, it will throw things out of balance.

Re: Mercruiser 3.7 charging

If you are going to use the alternator conversion, just knock off the other magnets, no reason to try to replace old magnets (No you can't buy them seperatly) or replace the complete pulley.

If you got the harmonic balancer off, take out the remaining magnets as already suggested. Remove the stator too, and then get a new piece of heater hose and by-pass the water cooled voltage regulator.

You'll love the conversion, make sure you get the right kit if you have power steering, and carefully align the additional pulley if you have the new sstyle balancer.

Don't pay more than $395 for a complete conversion kit, there's plenty of sites out there selling them and prices range from $365 to $549. Here's some info....

http://ebasicpower.american-data.ne...GY&Store_Code=ebasicpower&Category_Code=MER6A
http://www.breezeworks.net/

I got mine from eBasicPower for $369, this years price is a little higher. Verify if you want top or bottom mount.

It looks as if Breezeworks has a good price on their kit. He has the kit for $89.00, a rebuilt alternator with a 1 yr. warranty for $109.00

Anyone tried this conversion kit?

Re: Mercruiser 3.7 charging

2kflhr...note that you'll still need a alternator with the $89 Breezeworks conversion kits. You'll need to select the "Low Mount" kit and specify the long belt if you have power steering.

Brackets for these kits however are not as 'beefy' as the Wagner kit that Breezeworks also sells. Has anyoine tried these???
