I just had a simple question regarding my engine. I have a 1992 MerCruiser 3.0L that came equipped with power steering. Now, every mechanic I have talked with said that that was an option on that year I guess.

Well, my power steering has given me nothing but problems, so I wanted to remove it. First, it ate up belts about every trip out. Then, the bracket broke. Then, the threads stripped on the power steering pump (the ones that bolt it to the bracket). So I got a new power steering pump, which was Mission Impossible to find. After I installed the new pump, which is the exact same dimensions as the old one, it just froze up, and I ended up just removing the belt. Now I have no power steering, and the steering is very stiff (as expected).

I was wondering if I remove all power steering components, would my steering be any better than having to pry with both hands to turn?

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Trick with replacing the PS pump is getting a new automotive one minus the reservoir from Autozone and just swapping the res. $60 later, you are done

Well the one I have is pretty much new, it came off another 3.0L but it had the bracket, the reservoir, and the pulley. I am beginning to think that is why I had such a hard time finding a 3-groove pulley for that engine, because of the power steering being an option, and a very rare one at that.

I am just fed up with it giving me problems, even the new one is causing me grief. I don't understand why it would just lock up, it sits in the exact same spot as the old one, lines up perfectly, and looks the exact same. But for some reason, this one stopped spinning, almost popped my alternator belt in the process, and it is just a huge headache.

Sure, you can take it off. You would also need to remove the cylinder on the transom shield, it may be what is binding and causing all your other PS problems.
Just get parts 18 thru 22. About 150 bucks new. But should be easy to find used as well

I realize this thread is old but I had a question directly related and somebody else may have the same question. I am looking to replace my power steering with manual steering and have looked for the above image but can't seem to locate the parts the images are referencing. Any help would b e appreciated.

Even though it's an old thread, it belongs to someone else. So your question can be seen and answered, you really need to start a new thread of your own.
