Guys,

I have a 99 Mercruiser 3.0L, and was wondering about what the "average" fuel usage in gallons per hour might be from other boaters using this engine ? I am currently running a 14x18 4-blade CompProp (composite) prop, and try to stay in crusing speed of around 32 mph. Seems I got better fuel econmoy running my 3 blade aluminum 14x19 prop.......

hmmmmmmmm

BowriderBob
99 VIP 184 VIVA
Mercruiser 3.0

Checkinh fuel consumption calls for great care. You must compare under the same conditions as even the slightest difference may influence on the results.

19" theoretically gives better results than 18" while cruising. Another factor is slip. If the 18" in reality performs like a 17" due to blade design or variation in material, the slip (difference between the nominal pitch and the actual pitch), may result in higher consumption. When comparing to others, the displacement, boat weight, wind and hull design along with devices like trim flaps and hydroplanes must be considered.

The best mileage should be when you're planning steadily at the lowest possible rpm. Make sure you're not running at a speed just below 'steady planning' as this will consume even more. You must be ON PLANE. Distribute your weight to help this. Very often this is between one third and half off the throttle from WOT.
