I took off the starter solenoid because it was corroded and bought a replacement at Advanced Auto Parts. When i tried to install the new one the inner circle was too small. Compared the new one with the old starter solenoid and it in fact was smaller. SO no fit. Im not a mechanic and have little experience with engines. What part do I need to buy?

Boat is a 1986 Glasstream Cutlass 172... 3.0L 140HP engine

Welcome aboard!

Your part will not fit because your starter is not an automobile starter - and the 3 liter was never used in cars. Advance Auto isn't exactly known for its marine parts.

Usually it is best to simply buy a new starter. Here's a site with pretty good prices on starters.

I've tried to get the starter off but no luck. The bottom bolt seems to be stuck. Do I need an air impact wrench to get this off?

I bought a starter from DB, it's been working fine for a year now. Make sure you get the correct starter as there are 2 available for the 3.0/140, staggered and straight bolt pattern.

I agree, auto parts shouldn't be used on a boat. Probably the reason the other one was corroded.
