I am considering buying a used boat (1990 Glastron Sierra 170) that I has the condition listed as the subject. I am interested in opinions on the most likely cause and extent of damage as I will be completing an inspection next week.
Other facts:
supposedly did not overheat
engine cranks fine
no oil in water or milky substance
am being told minor repair - possible cylinder head crack or gasket leak

What should I be checking, and how, to determine the extent of the needed repairs?

Right to the point here, I would not buy the boat. Why start out needing to possibly have the head replaced?

I am assuming the seller is the one saying it's minor.
Wonder why he doesn't fix this "Minor" problem before trying to sell it....... or maybe it isn't minor and he just wants to get rid of it while it still runs so he doesn't have to throw lots of money at it.

Just factor in an Extra Couple Grand to cover the Little Stuff................. ;)
A Compression Test,...... A Leak-Down Test,..... And a Cooling System Pressure Test,......

I'm Sure you'll find the Issues by then............. ;)

Oh,.... I Almost Forgot,........ Look over,+ Pressure Test the Manifold.............
