Greetings. This issue has bothered me for quite sometime, but has never been any kind of problem. Just a curiosity oddity of sorts.
My 2014 3.0 Merc has less than a hundred hours on it. It has two new batteries, yet it turns over kind of sluggishly. At least compared to my vehicle engines. This is my first boat, so I have nothing to compare it to, yet the slowness of the motor when starting has always been a curiosity topic. The boat has never failed to start, or had any starting issues other than its apparent slow rotation when starting. At any rate, I just thought I would ask. Thanks.

start by cleaning every battery cable connection from the batteries to the starter and block, etc. by clean, shiny enough your kids can eat off them.

make sure every connection is tight

if you have wingnuts on your battery connections, throw them away and get real elastic lock nuts.

if any of the cables show green conductors, replace them.

when all connections are clean and secure, seal them with marine electrical varnish (green)

bad cables or connections are the #1 reason for slow cranking

It honestly does not sound like a connection problem. By that, I mean it sounds slow, but not sluggish. That said, I appreciate the input and I will certainly check what you have posted. The starter is actually fairly small in size compared to an automobile starter, and I wondered if the slow rotation was a result of starter size?

the starter is most likely a PMGR which is stronger and spins the motor faster than the old direct drive starters.

again, check the connections and the cables.

Ayuh,...... Ditto what the grumpy old guy said,....

The small starters are better than the ole big ones, 'n bad connections, either (+) or (-) are most likely yer problem,.....

Cleaned every cable and terminal and no change was noticed in engine revolution speed. The starter has a part number - that I forgot to write down - and said marine starter. It is very small in size, but this is a 3.0 Merc engine.
The boat has always required a few revolutions to star - not as quick as my automobiles, so maybe that is why I notice it more.?????
