Just thought id throw a few pics up of the engine part of my boat resto, this is an extremely low houred unit, the only thing this boat had from new was neglect, when i got it i decided to pull the head (better safe than sorry, especially on the water!!), as the manifold riser gasket was bad and sure enough i had a nasty rust ring in #4. It was to deep a pitting to rub out with the hone so i stripped the block and got a liner stuck in it, went back with all new rings, shells and gaskets, then gave her a lovely paint job if i do say so myself.
Block back from machine shop.

All buttoned up and masked ready for paint.

All done, ready to stick manifold back on and get it back in boat and running.

Nice work man... and best of luck!!......

but holy friggen oil filter!!!!!!!!

Might as well keep that one for break in..... but in the future... Pick up a Napa brand or Wix brand filter..... They are alot better than the STP brand.... at 1/4 of that size.

If the pics are to big, Hold down your Ctrl key and roll wheel on your mouse to zoom in and out.

But then the text is too small to read.

Huhh. Those original Photos fit perfect on my 22" monitor at 100% zoom.

Can the original poster tell us what the size of those photos are?

By the way I like the oil filter, but would look nice painted black too.

Man where did you get that oil filter ?

It's a joke right ?

Off a diesel or something, don't even use one that big on planes.

Beeeeeautiful! Nice work!

I have to agree on the oil filter. It MAY not fit in the boat.;)

I have an oil filter comparison kit sitting on my shelf. It has eight different brands in it. NAPA (Gold) and WIX are #'s 5 and 6 with Fram bringing up the bottom.

By far, the OEM brands regardless of make, are far superior. In your case the easiest to cross ref. would be an A/C Delco. A few extra sheckles isn't going to break anyone.

Re: Mercruiser 3.0 'rebuild'

food for thought. i don't see the hone doing a cross hatch pattern on th cyl. walls.... maybe it's my misunderstanding of a proper final honing of cylinder walls... not that i know that much about it... maybe it ain't that important....
it does look like new... sweet...

Re: Mercruiser 3.0 'rebuild'

That's not an oil filter its a remote reservoir like a corvette!!!,:p Yeah, shes some oil filter ain't she!!! lmao.:D The one i took off this engine was the same size and when i crossed the number at the parts store they gave me this, so i guess it'll do for the break in. Sorry for the picture size, its ok on my PC screen but when i checked on my laptop i see what u mean!! (Now re-sized!!;)) The pistons don't have any carbon on them as i got all that off, all you see is a slight discolouration from the combustion process, but good tip on the diesel cleaning, that'll remove many stubborn things, inc paint from skin!! (oops did i say that!!).;) The cyl walls do have the correct 45 degree cross hatch oil retention surfacing performed by the shop who did my sleeve, btw. My manifold gasket set should arrive this week along with a carb kit, and from Ebay a fuel pump and the plate that bolts to the flywheel housing and covers the front lower half of it, so once i get these on shes ready for the boat and initial firing up!! :D

I love engine rebuild pics. Especially the older mercruisers coming back to life for a second go around. Everything looks perfect-Good luck with it.

Re: Mercruiser 3.0 'REBUILD'

is it common for the #4 to get water into it?
I am looking at a boat that has the same problem and i was
thinking of getting and doing a rebuild on it.
I am a little worried that it isnt a gasket problem that caused
the damage and that maybe its the exhaust or something
that will cost to much to fix.
btw what did it cost to do the re sleeve?

thanks

Re: Mercruiser 3.0 'REBUILD'

Chris what was if you don't mind a fellow 3.0 owner asking was the final $ figure on this project? I'm seriously considering the same workup on my 95 LX if the 4 figurure isn't to high before considering something bigger (motor and boat that is). But congrats that poer plant looks great I can't believe I didn't catch this thread in January.

didn't think I was hijacking,, asked what the cost was of doing the resleeve
and who better to ask my question, someone who has / had the exact same
issue as what I am seeing.
just thought this thread might have insight into this question.
I did see that this thread was a little old but not to bad.
hope the op is still around to maybe give a couple answers.

sorry if I upset anyone
