I have a problem maybe someone can tell em whats wrong .. First off its a 1995 Sea pro W/A with a mercruiser 3.0lx with an Alpha 1 While cruising I heard a loud almost "tapping"" or "clinking noise" then I lost power gradually I stopped and went again and it happenned again it eventually got worse now it happens when i throttle up at all all the time. WOT is 3000 rpms instead of 4100 and top speed is 13 mph instead of 31 with a 19p prop the engine is under stress the noise sounds like it is coming from the back of the engine near the stern drive to the right looking at it from the front when I rev the engine in Nuetral the engine sounds fine just when it is in gear and there is no problem shifting into reverse the noise is sporadic so its not like a card in a bike spoke type of thing Any ideas ?? Thanx in advance

Lets go through this, in nuetral it's fine.
In gear it's under load and you don't get the R's.
I would check the lower half of the lower unit for bad bearings/gears. Sounds lke you are binding up somewhere.

Being as you have lost speed and rpm since the bang, have you checked your prop nut?

Could your prop be spinning? Just an hunch.

Sound can travel all the way up into your boat and eventually reach your beer.

PB

I know this post is old but it could have been the exhaust flapper breaking, the Mercs have a habit of breaking and blocking the exhaust flow, hence loss of power or stalling, The tapping noise is whats left of the flapper striking the exhaust tube.
