I have a 1989 Searay with a 3 litre(4 cyl.)I/O .Engine always starts just great, idles and revs O.K in neutral. It also runs fine in "drive" at low speed/rpms, but when greater is demanded, it begins to faulter, then quits(just as if out of fuel).Have added methyl hydrate to fuel, checked/replaced fuel filter at pump, and repl.screen at carb, but still no luck. Fuel pump does seem to function properly and supply fuel to carb. Ignition is solid state distributor.....any suggestions/---Kent

Sounds like a fuel Issue..... Start at the Fuel Tank,+ work your way to the carb....

It sounds like the interrupper switch being kicked in when you apply throtle. If this is the case the shift cable is sticking or the linkage is tight.( The cable for the engine to the drive.) Vinney

Had the exact same problem with a Mercruiser I/O, turned out to be a gasket in the carb had gone bad and was leaking air where it shouldn't, disturbing the mixture and poof, engine dies. Always happened at roughly the same throttle setting.

Also suspected the ignition killer switch (which should only trigger when changing gears) like Vinney suggested, it wasn't the reason for me but it could also very well be the problem.
