1989 Mercruiser 3.0 130 hp. New plugs, points, timing set, fuel filter, runs great EXCEPT under heavy load such as pulling up a skier. Full throttle gives hesitation. Runs rough enough to make it hard to pull up a heavier skier. Half throttle works well for small skiers but not adults. Thanks for any help.

With engine off,

- Look straight down inside your carb
- have someone pump the throttle lever for you, a couple of times.
- you should see a nice steady stream of gas squirting inside there.
- if you don't you may need an excellerator pump inside the carb.

- you can also check to make sure the carb fuel bowl is filling up all the way.
- Needle and seat may be stuck, thus leaving you with a shortage of fuel on demand.

Accelerator pump looks good so looks like the carb comes apart. Thanks.

punthouse,

Before you rip into the carb. make sure the timing is advancing.

Get a hold of a timing light and see how the timing reacts under acceleration.

Yep,...
And you Might want to Check to see if you're getting Good Pressure from the Fuel Pump......
And, Did you Change Both Fuel Filters ??????
I Think your motor has the little filter in the carb.... As well as the 1 in the Fuel Pump.....

A fuel filter in the fuel pump? This is new to me. How is this done. The filter in the carb was clean but did not know of one on/in the pump. Thanks for your time.

Doesn't your fuelpump have a steel bowl on top, held down with a strap clamp... 5/16s or 3/8s" screw head pointing straight up ?????????
There's Supposed to be a Creamic, or paper filter under the bowl.......

Hello
that killer little pump filter that no one changes cause ya cant get to it causes a lot of problems. it looks like a little metal can with a strap and a center bolt that is safty wired to prevent loosening. if you break off the bolt cause its steel:) you have to cut the strap. the strap is not availible from mercrusier and the inlet/outlet ports on the new mexican replacement pumps are not clocked like the old inlet/outlet ports so new fittings will be required.I dont design the things I just gotta fix them
good luck and keep posting :)
