Hi all,

I am finishing rebuilding a 2000 Mercruiser 3.0 that has the newer 14" flywheel and coupler, however the coupler is rusted out.

I have 2 spare engines (1995 & 1997) that have the older 12 3/4" flywheel/coupler which are in great shape.

Would there be any issue using the older style setup on the newer block, they all have the updated 1 piece seal? I have the starters and bolts to make it work, just curious if there would be any problems.

I believe the only difference would be a higher cranking speed.

Thank you

Hmmmm,....... Donno,..... Does the block have all 3 threaded bolt holes for the starter swap,..??
Are the splines of the couplers the same distance off the flywheel,..??
If so, it oughta work,....

If the spare couplers are the style that are triangular in shape that had 3 mounting points then they should bolt to your flywheel. The kind you cannot use are the type that bolted to the 6 crankshaft studs that mount the flywheel.

If you've got the starter mount that will work, then you're good. Reminds me of my "hot rod" days! We frequently shaved heads, bored blocks for oversized pistons, and did other things to increase compression. When we did this, we either had to purchase a very high priced heavy duty starter, or we could go with a larger flywheel and use spacers to modify the mounting of the stock starter to accommodate for the larger gear ring to reduce the strain on the stock starter.
