I am getting ready to pull the motor out of my boat. It is a mercruiser 260, in a wellcraft airslot 24 fish. My question is, can I pull the motor out by "splitting" it from bell housing? I have removed everything, including the bell housing bolts, and starter. I dont want to damage other parts, thats the reason for my question.

much thanks and regards,

rich

You'd do much better to pull the outdrive, then pull the motor with the bellhousing attached.

Trying to pull/install it with the outdrive in place almost garuntees that you'll damage the coupling on the flywheel (bonded rubber).

Takes 8 bolts and about 5 minutes to pull the outdrive.

Besides you'll never know if the alignment is right.

with the right setup and take your time and be easy its not hard like i said easy to leave bell on. u can see when its ready to come off the shaft put it back with the bell on for sure mines been in in out 3 or 4 times and same rubber i play with 2 motors in ther a 454 and a 502 going to try a 496 soon even have a 1969 396 i might try i can take one out and put it back in a day its not bad. thats air tools and a 110 hoist from harbor freight makes it easy and smooth thats the main thing

Fuel line, throttle & shift cables, trim sender harness, Battery, cannon plug, exhaust tubes. What steering bracket?

Re: mercruiser 260 pull

If you're talking about the power steering unit on the transom bracket, I found it easier on mine to just leave the steering unit on the transom. I unscrewed the hoses from the transom unit and took out the power steering pump (on the engine) and hoses along with the engine.
