Re: mercruiser 228 overheating

Could be many different things. Any why no t-stat? An engine with cooling problems will still overheat, just takes longer. Therefore removing the t-stat does nothing but delay warm up, causing more wear in the engine cylinders.

Id start by installing a thermastat of the correct temp and go from there.

when I bought the boat 4 years ago didnt have Thermostat and never overheat before, so I never installed one, the engine oil is clean doesnt show any signs of water, can be the head gasket, can the head gasket go bad just like that?...

I'm going to guess you have never replaced the impeller either then.
Do both, the stat and the impeller and see what you got.

Yes the head gasket can "just go", but it usually has a reason.

Or a rotten exhaust manifold or riser, those probs can come on suddenly.

How about the hose from the bell housing to the transom plate? And an impeller can fail in a few seconds if conditions are right.

Doesn't matter if it's brand new, look at it. If it has a kink in it because it wasn't pushed all the way on, or the installer had the natural curve of the hose going the wrong way it could be kinked cutting off a large portion of cooling water.

Same with the raw water pump impeller. All it takes is one plastic bag over the intake and you could damage the impeller. On any IO overheat, the first thing you check is the impeller.
