Hi All

I have my first new boat and I've had it in the water 6 times so far. Yesterday when I started her back up after drifting, there was a lot more smoke than normal, I noticed the oil pressure guage said about 2 - 4 psi. When I put her in gear and moved her the pressure went up to about 30 psi.

When we got to where we were going, I put her back in idle and the pressure remained the same. This is when I made a bad decision. Thinking that the smoke was something bad, I decieded to let the engine idle during our drift, after about 1/2 hour smoke was coming from under the engine cover. I saw the temp gauge at 250 and oil pressure at 2 - 4 psi again. I immediately shut the engine down and removed the cover and dropped anchor.

I let her cool down and checked the hoses and the bildge. There was a small amount of anti-freeze in the bildge and none of the hoses were wet. At 150 degrees I started her back up. When I reved the engine the temp went down and the oil pressure was at 40 psi.

Lifted the anchor, put her in gear and off I went to limp home. On the way back the oil pressure dropped again and the temp went up to a little over 175 degrees. I was in a no wake zone so I couldn't go any faster, But I would rev the engine for a bit to get the pressure up and the temp down.

This morning I checked the oil and it is thick and sticky - It still looks clean - like new oil.

So my question is - How much damage did I do and what steps besides changing the oil and filter do I have to accomplish?

Re: Mercruiser 170 Low oil pressure

Change the impeller
Check coolant level
Change oil and filter
Remove oil sender , install a mech gauge,or install a T fitting and use both to compare readings, may be just a bad sender or gauge.
