My distributor on the Chevy 250 cid straight six is worn, alot of side to side motion of the shaft. Can it be rebuilt, like the bushing replaced, or should I put in a new one and go electronic?

They can be rebuilt. Not sure if the Delco EST is made for the straight 6.

Re: Mercruiser 165 worn distributor

Hi Guys:

Merry Christmas to all of you and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Over the last couple of years I've rebuilt 5 inline six engines and I've put a Pertronix electronic kit in each of the stock distributors with excellent results. They cost around $100 each and give me great peace of mind knowing I'm unlikely to have any problems from them. It sounds to me though, that your distributor needs replacing and then add the electronic kit. I hope this helps.

if it were me, i think i'd remove the dist. and take it to a dist. rebuild shop to confirm a worn out dist. shaft/bushing. have it bench tested somewhere. if in fact the dist. shaft, or bush is bad. the s/m for my 75 dist. says replace dist. body and shaft. if the part is nla. it's gonna be a punt as to which direction to turn. perhaps used? maybe a dist. shop can press in a new bush? dist. shaft would be an obstetrical. all ya gotta do though is get inside specs.

as for the elec. ign. imho, that ain't gonna do anything for rectification of your issue if ya got a worn dist. shaft or bushing. the dwell will still vary.

I would go with that Mallory distributor before I rebuilt the old one and put a Pertronix in it. All the Pertronix unit is going to do is replace the function of the points. An electronic distributor will also electronically adjust the advance so there will be no weights.

Be aware that the one in the ebay auction that you posted is also rebuilt. I would also do a bit more research into the reliability of these. Points are pretty darn reliable when you replace them annually. The new price on the Mallory distributor is around $420.

edit:

Here is one for $350

Throw out the old distributor and install a new Mallory electronic distributor, don't forget a new coil.

I know that when points are new and well adjusted, the engine runs fine. But for me, never never points again. I replaced the points with an electronic kit (and new coils)on a pair of OMC 165s(the distributor was not changed so still weights for advance)

But what a change, the enging can idle as low as you want to. The points were probably worn, and the coil was old, but before the change, the engines would have to go at least 800-900 rpm idle, otherwise the rpm slowly dropped and finally the engines stalled.

Now they are running 600-700 idle, and can do that the whole day. They can do 500 rpm, but for me, that is too low. Cooling and lubrication works better if the engine has some rpms, I think.

Hi Guys:

I think I'd go with the Mallory. It seems to be a good price and you'd have to rebuild/replace your distributor and then install Pertronix which would cost a lot more.

Many distributors use the same 1/2" (?) bronze bushing as a starter uses in the armature end.
