mercruiser 165 starter probs now

I replaced starter and soleniod and the boat cranked fine for about the first few minutes. Now all I get is a almost like grinding noise like the bendix isn;t engaging. Is there something in outdrive thats not allowing starter to kick in, like partially in gear or something? Could battery not be strong enough?

Please Help.

I have the same motor in my boat I would check the battery 1st.

It sounds to me like you need to shim the starter but the first thing I?d do is pull the starter back off and check the condition of both the ring gear and the gear on the starter.
