Mercruiser 140 won't go into reverse

I need help. I replaced the impeller on my mercruiser 140. I put the gear selector in forward gear and when I got the foot off I made sure the shift linkage in the foot was turned fully clockwise. I put it back together and now I can only get the engine to **** into forward and neutral. I checked the linkage between the console (Pontoon Boat) and engine top and it works fine. The linkage from the engine to foot seems to be binding. Any suggestions or can anyone advise where I can take it for repair near Talladega, Alabama. Thanks

did it shift on the bench?
did you put the flat washer back on top of the lower shift shaft prior to reassembly?

Yes I could move it from forward to reverse on bench after I put the impeller in. I did not remove the ss washer from shifter but did notice it is bent. Could that be my problem?
