I got my newly rebuild 1977 Starcraft Super Sport on the water today to find that the steering is backwards. I did have the gimble ring out to replace the trim switch in the gimble ring. The only thing I can think of is that the steering arm got installed on the gear wrong. Am I correct? I dont want to tear the whole outdrive apart if I am wrong. The steering on this boat has a rack under the dash so I dont think that can be backwards.

Nothing you could do on the transom shield to make the steering backwards. My guess is you have the steering cable installed wrong on at your helm unit. The rack has to be on top of the steering unit, you probably have it hanging from the bottom.

Don, I think you are correct! It is hanging from the bottom. I will turn the steering gear around and see how it goes. You are truly the Oracle by the Sea!

Just switched the steering wheel around and now it steers in the correct direction...Amazing!
