Hi,

I am rebuliding the following engine after she popped a core plug and I tore her down fully to check the block for cracks; Mercruiser, MCM 140, Serial number 5568367.

After finding no cracks, and cleaning and calibrating everything (all calibrations are in spec as per manual) I ordered all parts needed for the rebuild. All components are standard and nothing is oversize. I initially ordered OEM (Quicksilver) parts. I ordered what I thought was 4 sets of new piston rings P/N 39-17464, but only received 1 set. On checking the price was for 1 set (?86)!! Bloody expensive here in U.K!!

Anyway, running short on budget I ordered 3 sets of Sierra piston rings P/No. 18-3937 at ?30/set.

I am now ready to refit them. I have checked all rings and they are the same thickness as those removed and the Siera match the Quicksilver in every aspect except as follows. I checked all ring butt gaps and all are in spec.

The only differences that I have noted are;

1). The spacer on the oil control ring is different between the quicksilver and the sierra rings. On the quicksilver the 'corrugations' are vertical, on the Sierra they are horizontal. As this is just a spacer I dont see any issue?

2). The Quicklsiver compression (top) ring has a dot on it to show the upwards orientation, the Sierra rings have no marks on them, and the section of the ring is square so there is no indication of which way up?

Does anybody see any problems fitting the Quicksilver rings to 1 cylinder and the Sierra rings to the other 3?

Thanks, Paul
