Im trying to get a 1986 renken 18.5 b/w running.It has a mercruiser 140 4 cyl engine.
I took the head into NAPA to get the valves ground
and after they powerwashed the head they said they
found a crack and the head is not repairable. My question is, Can the 120 head be used on the 140 engine and is there a year range that I can
watch for that will work ?

Re: Mercruiser 140 head replacement

There are some tricks to interchange some heads on those motors. Call Jack at Flagship (800-282-2840) and he'll be happy to help.

Good luck!

Thanks Dhadley, That guy knows quit a bit and was very helpful. He said they are not interchangable.
I guess my search continues for a 140 head.

I'm suprised he didnt have one for you. Anyway try Superior Marine at 800-338-9281 (also a Jack or Gordon). They have tons of used parts and can probably fix you up.

Tell them I said hello.

Good luck!

Re: Mercruiser 140 head replacement

I had the same problem on my 1988 renken 19' with the same engine. Luckily I bought it from a reputable dealer and the problem surfaced the first time I took it out.
The dealer found 3 heads over a 2 month period and the first 2 were cracked as well.
I wish you the best of luck finding a decent head.
Brian

Re: Mercruiser 140 head replacement

the 140 is a 3.0L and the 120 is a 2.5L which will not work. Usually you can go bigger, but not smaller. Too bad the 3.0 is the biggest production 4-cyl

Did you check out E-Bay to see if they had any heads? But then again you don't know if those are cracked either until they are dunked

Re: Mercruiser 140 head replacement

Isn't this engine a GM "Iron Duke" engine. As such, there should be tons of these engines in the salvage yards unless the marine head is different in some way.

bowhuntr

The "iron dukes" were all 153's. The 181's came after they went out of production for autos. It'a a Marine and Industrial engine now and cannot be bored any further. The head was modified for the 181. You might be able to go to an industrial engine site and find one. The valve springs have to be the double spring kind for Marine use. Those you can get easy.
