Went fishin for stripers on Saturday and towed back (BUMMER) We were trolling at around 3 mph when I heard a whining sound come from the rear of the engine/bellhousing area. No go, was wondering what the most common drive related problems with this setup is and was thinking it may be the coupler and shaft. Gimme some thoughts guys, thanks

First of all..Did your engine temp go up? If so its the Coupler for shure! Look for burnt rubber at the transom (inside the boat). It really depends on why you stopped..More info please.

my wife was driving the boat and I was too busy pulling open the engine cover and inspecting the cables and mounts to look at the engine temp. Why would the engine temperature go up on a drive problem?

Simple..The 140 impeller "waterpump" is in the lower unit. So if the coupler is spun the impeller will not be turning so the engine will overheat. If it is just a spun prop hub the engine temp will be normal. Hope this helps.
PS.

If your not shure install a spare prop on it and try it or take your prop to a propshop and have it tested. You cannot tell if its spun.
If its a spun coupler make shure you have the rear mounts on the 140 replaced and the outdrive alignment checked.. Rear mounts are the main cause for coupler failure on that engine. They get compressed over time and engine alignment gets off and it destroys the coupler.
