Mercruiser 140 1976 Down trim limit.

Hello people,

Would love your help with adjusting my power trim limit.

I have a boat with a pre alpha Mercruiser 140 sterndrive and then alpha one trim cylinder.
Now I am in the process of adjusting it but I am unsure what distance to use for this.

In the book for a pre alpha they indicate that, the bellhousing has to be inside those wings sticking out from the gimbal ring by 3/4" to 1" when trimmed up to where the limit switch stops the trim.

When I do that, the maximum limit works perfectly, only my power trim does not stop when it is fully retracted. Does that work on the same system as the trim limit sensor or is there another system for that that I need to adjust?

Please hear what could be wrong as I cannot find the error so far.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... The down limit is yer finger, take it off the switch, when the pump unloads,....

So is there nothing of protection if you press too long? That could so easily have been included with the trim limit switch, too bad they didn't.

Many times the limit stops working, so if there was a limit with down and the drive was up, that could be worst IMO

There is no down limit, down is down/in

Most sterndrive operators learn to listen for the change in tine of the pump while idling in a ni wake zone. Thus lets them know the drive is full down/in. When getting on plane you then trim up/out to the desired angle for best planing/operation. The up limit is to prevent the drive from raising too high so the u joint assy won't be damaged.

Other manufacturers do not use a trim limit, they rely on the operator to monitor the gauge to prevent trimming up/out too far

There is a no down limit

Other than a sore finger, there is no damage in holding the button forever

Your motor would have cost over $50 more in 1976, meaning the boat builder would have paid $150 more, meaning the initial buyer would have had to pay $900 more for a feature that is not needed.

well my trim switch is the wires of the corrosion and its falling off .I did it of my limit trim switch of the wires ..look up the trim switch and the wires of the OHM METER ...
