Mercruiser #1 trim limit switch?

I found the insulation of the trim limit switch wires is hard/cracking and missing in places, so I need to find out how to replace the switch. After looking around for online manuals I didn't find any of them that referenced this old style switch on my 72 #1 drive (S/N 2901044). Here's a shot of the the upper transom assembly from outside the boat.

I can see the cover/arm that contacts the switch, but don't know what is involved in replacing the switch, all the manuals I've seen reference the new style switch. Looks like it's going to be a real bear since from what I can see, the bell housing needs to be removed to get enough access to remove the switch.

I haven't noticed problems with the switch,,, except for 1 time a few years ago the drive wouldn't go down while launching the boat.

What are the ill effects of jumpering the bullet connectors and bypassing this switch? Or am I stupid for even asking that question...

I would bet that 99% of those older one drives out there have the system bapassed or just plain don't mess with it and use the tilt button to trim up.
If you trim up to high, the rpm goes up and the speed goes down.
Trim is a constantly changing adjustment due to wind and waves, and soon you can feel and hear the proper trim and won't need that trim limit switch at all.

I'm the 1% then... coz i've got one sitting out in my yard and it works.
The switch is a pita to change... and not really worth it.
BTW fisherdan, that switch only limits trim up... doesn't have anything to do with the drive going down. theres no need to jump the connection or anything like that... just to trim out push in on the top two buttons at the same time on your trim control switch.

Cool deal! That's one less thing I have to worry about.

This boat has had ??? (only God knows) PO's and I've had to fix lots of hacks.

I know the 3 button trim switch is supposed to function different than it does as I only have to push 1 button for up and down, don't have to push 2 buttons at 1 time to get the drive to raise or lower,,, or how ever it's supposed to work. At one time someone put a Scotch Lock (the scourge of all electrical problems) across 2 wires in the trim system. I haven't looked to see what the affecting switch does, but I'm sure it has something to do with locking out the useless trim button...

pushing the one button for up i'd think means it's bypassed. i'm in the 99%, mine don't work, i use tilt w/ caution., middle and top button for up. anyways, that ain't what i wanted to put ya onto....
