I found another problem during my engine install ... (72 Mercruiser 140HP 3.0 S/N 2913009, #1 drive S/N 2901044)
I removed the exhaust down pipe (so I could remove/replace trim hoses) and noticed there was no gasket used between the gimble housing and exhaust down pipe I assume there is supposed to be a gasket between these 2 parts and just not sealed with some type of liquid gasket material,,, correct?
While cleaning up the mating surfaces I didn't notice any sealer and only scraped off some corrosion and old paint. Heck, while I was removing the bolts it was wiggling around and not stuck to the gimble housing. Guess I might have found my pesky water leak.
Now what's that tag line I've read here before... just because you found it that way, doesn't mean it's supposed to be that way! Kind of sums up my engine rebuild...
