Just recently purchased an old boat w/65 hp 1975 Mercury 650 outboard. The Mercontrol on this boat has 2 levers, the obvious one being the upright shift/throttle lever. There is another lever that slides upwards from the rear of the Mercontrol - what is its purpose?
Thanks!

Re: Mercontrol

Hello Harvman,
It sounds like the lever you're describing is the warm-up lever. It usually advances the timing and gives the engine extra throttle. This will aid in starting a cold engine.
hope this helps

Re: Mercontrol

Basically, what you should do to get that motor fired up quick and easy almost every time is.

1. Pump the primer bulb until firm.

2. Lift that little lever "Lift for Cold Start" all the way up.

3. Push and hold the choke button.

4. Turn the key and crank until it fires, then let go og the key and the choke button and then bring down the "Lift for Cold Start" lever until the RPM's are about 1200 - 1400 and keep it in that range until it's warm and then push that lever all the way down and have a great day on the water.

If that cold start lever starts to lift by it's self, when shifting from reverse to neutral. Just tie some string around the key switch and hook it over the cold start lever cause if that lever is raised and you try to go, you will be limited to about 1/4 throttle. I had that happen on my parents old MerControl and that fixed it.

I hope that this helps.

Craig
