ok, im new to boating, when using the control box, how high up should you lift the black bar at start up? i am lifting way past straight up.
then do you put it in gear and then slowly lower the black bar?.
Should the idle be high enough to run and putting the warmup lever all the way down before putting it in gear?
when i put it in forward, as i push the black lever down the forward lever only comes up about an inch, that is how much throttle i have about an inch and the engine wont really rev up?
any suggestions to properly use this device would be helpful, thanks
the engine is a 1967 950 inline 6

Mines a 1978 70hp, but should be similar enough.

I raise the warmup lever just past vertical, start it up (with choke when cold), quickly lower the bar to idle at about 2000rpm for awhile to warm it up, put the bar all the way down, then put it in gear.

If the engine is warm, on a restart you should not need the warmup lever (or choke).

Re: mercontrol box operation for dummies help!

Johnny, It depends on what the motor requires. On my old tower, with choke shutters, I usually needed to lift the cold start lever all the way to start. My newer V6 only needs about 1/2 that.

BTW- The cold start lever must be all the way down to accelerate. So push it down, and put her into gear and give some throttle, all in one motion.
