Hello, I have been working on a project boat and one task that needed to be done was replace the ignition, which required disassembly of the mercontrol, and now I can't get it back together right. Currently it is stuck in reverse from when I start it (supposed to be in nuetral), in forward, and in reverse, and it will throttle up in forward and reverse also. The shifter also moves very stiff and is reluctant to move at all sometimes. I know it worked properly before I took it apart so I know I did something wrong. I also recently took off the lower unit so maybe I connected the shift linkage wrong??? If anybody can guide me it would be great. I want to get this done asap because it is the only thing keeping this boat out of the water and so close to being done with this project.

Disconnect the shift/throttle cables at the motor end to determine if the Mercontrol or shift linkage to the lower unit is causing the problem. I had to go through several splits of the control box to get mine to work right. Make sure the box is in neutral and the warm-up lever is down before bringing the two halves together. Sometimes you have to play with the two levers to get it to pop into place.

Ok I'll give that a try, I think it must be the shift linkage because the l/u is in reverse and the control is in neutral

While the cables are off the motor make sure they aren't reversed. If I remember, you only have N and R when switched. It's been a while.

Ok so I took apart the control box again, took off the lower unit, and isolated the cable that wasn't moving. The shift cable was not able to move while still attached to the motor, so i disconnected it from the motor and then I tried to move the cable again to see if the cable was the problem, it wasn't. I moved freely when it wasn't attached to anything. So now I know the problem is the linkage that goes to the center of the motor and then down to the lower unit, this will not budge. I tried to use a screwdriver in the gear on the bottom to try to move it but it still didn't move, any advice???? This thing is deep in the motor and very hard hard to access, I'm not sure but I think the linkage going from the cable to the center of the motor may be the problem. Let me know if I need to explain it better.
