Needs some help, Please I have a 1995 Mercury 150 XRi Black Max 2.5L Salt water motor. It came with the 1978 17 ft Mako I just bought. Previous owner said it needs a flywheel. Said motor was running great but magnets on the bottom side of flywheel came off. Is this a common problem???? Boat and motor have been setting for 8 months. I am going to take the plugs out spray the cylinders and spin the motor over and check the comp. If comp is good, what?s my best plan. New flywheel is available $312
Need some input thanks. P.S. Oil pump has been disconnected. I don?t mind mixing the tank is only 30 gallons. Should I go 50 to 1 ???? Thanks

Dave

50-1, check under the flywheel before turning it over. no telling what is torn up. think you are definately in need of a merc manual.

Dave, If the flywheel is indeed bad, you might try to get a used one. It will be much cheaper. Also, sometimes, you can purchase and glue the magnets back on.

Re: Merck 150 HELP

Thanks Commander Chris
I’m going to run a compression test tonight and if I’ve got good squeeze in all the cylinders, the flywheel is coming off. I checked with my local Merc dealer and I can get a new flywheel for $310.00
I’m hoping all is well under the flywheel. Do you know if this is a common problem and if it typically takes out other components when the magnets come off ???? Thanks for your help,

Dave

Re: Merck 150 HELP

Dave, I have never heard of Merc magnets coming off. I have heard of Johnson/Evinrude loosing their magnets, however.

Re: Merck 150 HELP

I pulled the plugs and sprayed the cylinder walls down, I tried to spin the flywheel with the starter, no deal! The starter drive would engage the flywheel but it just wasn?t going to budge. I put a big breaker bar on it and managed to move it back and forth a little.
The underside of the flywheel is rusted to the stator, that?s what is keeping the motor from turning over. I tried to remove the flywheel with my puller, it isn?t budging. I soaked down the shaft where the flywheel presses on with some WD-40 and I have tension on it with my puller. I?m going to let it soak until Thursday night and see if it will loosen up. I?m hoping it will. If I can?t get it move I guess I?ll try a big slide hammer. If anyone out there has any suggestions I would love to hear about it.
Thanks,

Dave

Re: Merck 150 HELP

Use BLASTER PB instead or in addition to to wd-40. Blaster is much better though.

Dave. Good luck pulling that flywheel. I would not think that the flywheel would touch the stator, hence the rusting together seems a bit unusual. Also I did not think a stator would be able to rust that much.

After you pull the flywheel, you will be able to tell if the cylinders are rusted as well. A bit of oil in the spark plug holes wouldn't hurt.

Re: Merck 150 HELP

What kind of a puller are you using?

The Mercury puller threads into the flywheel, and a large bolt presses on the end of the crank. There are some cheap ones out there with coarse thread or soft bolts that don't work very well. A hard one with a fine thread grade 8 bolt well lubed would pull it easily.

A hook type puller will break the flywheel long before it'll pull it.

If it's that rusty, I wouldn't hold my breath on the condition of the motor overall.

hope it helps

Re: Merck 150 HELP

:D It?s a heavy-duty automotive puller designed to pull off harmonic balancers ETC
It is not a hook type puller, it lays out over the top of the flywheel and bolts down to it with 3 predrilled holes in the flywheel. The center of the puller has a threaded shaft that threads through the puller and pushes down on the end of the crank while lifting up on the flywheel. It?s been soaking in P.B. Blaster for 48 hrs. I?m hoping it will come off tonight. If not I?m considering heating the flywheel with a torch. The stator is junk anyway so as long as I get good heat on the flywheel and minimal heat on the shaft I thing I?ll have a shot at it. The rest of the motor looks good, thank God. The cylinders are clean and piston travel is good as well. I have not been able to do a compression test yet because flywheel hangs up on stator about 90o

Thanks John,
It looks like the only thing that?s going to get this thing off is the Merc puller. The right tool for the job. Do you know where I can buy one ??????

Thanks,

Dave

Re: Merck 150 HELP

IMO after soaking the flywheel in WD-40, take a lot of tension on the puller, if it pushes on the crankshaft and then strike the center pulling bolt with a medium sized hammer, It will probably pop right off..In my expeiriences.
good luck

Re: Merck 150 HELP

Thanks for the tip. I?ve had it soaking with B.P. blaster, it?s the best penetrating stuff there is. It?s been soaking for a couple of days but no luck. I was string the top of my puller, as a mater of fact I was striking it so hard I bent the tool. LOL Bottom line is, it?s not coming off with my automotive puller. I ?m going to have to get the Merc puller and be done with this. Any idea where I can get the factory Merc flywheel puller????

Thanks,

Dave
