MercCruiser Tilt/Trim clicks at solenoid only.

A friends 1983 MercCruiser has tilt/trim problems. It was working last summer, but this year all he gets when he tries the control is a clicking noise near the solenoid. Have tried cleaning several connections there without any luck. Occasionally, (while we were cleaning connections) only moving the control down would create the click, other times both directions would click. Any suggestions?

If it's the power trim pump motor's solenoid that's clicking when you work the trim switch...check to see if there's battery voltage at one of the solenoid's two large terminals. If not, trace the lead from the solenoid terminal back to it's battery source (it may pick up power from the starter's battery terminal...my 898 model did originally) Find out why you have no voltage to the trim pump solenoid. Could be a bad fuse/circuit breaker.

If there is battery voltage at one of the large solenoid terminals, test for equal voltage on the other terminal when you engage the solenoid ie: work the trim switch. If no voltage is found this terminal...it's possible the solenoid is bad. If voltage is found...it's possible you have a bad pump motor or bad ground at the pump motor.

Let me know what you find...I'm working by memory here...I'm not even certain his trim set up is the same as mine...but I'll bet it's close.

Good luck...

Walt
