I have a '92, 18ft,Stingray with a 115hp Merc Cruiser. It has a 2 barrell carberator. Soon after I bought the boat in 92 it was discovered that the motor cover was not high enough to provide clearance for the nut that holds the spark arrester cover. I tried drilling away some of the cover to allow for clearance but eventually someone sat on the cover and caused the carburator bracket that holds the stud in place for the spark arrestor to break away from the carberator casting. I jury rigged the spark arrester in place for several years but now I want to repair it by welding or by replacing the broken part of the carb. I dont want to buy a completely new carberator as this one works perfectly. The problem is: When I tore the carberator down to get the upper housing away and to remove the choke plate shaft, the little brass phillips head screw that hold the stop lever for the choke plate inside the automatic choke housing stripped. The head, not the threads. I will attempt to drill it and tap-con it out but in case I screw that up I need to know if I can: first, locate and purchase just the top casting for this carb? then if I can't find that, Can I find and purchase just the choke plate shaft? There is no metal tag with the part number on the carb. The only number I can find is stamped on it #9562A-2 over 2103. Is this the valid part number. Can I weld this metal? I have a mig welder. Any ideas will be helpful.
