Any one have problems with a Merc Carb? I have a 140hp I/O w/inline 4 and a 2bbl Merc Carb. It has a bad hesitation out of the hole. Carb is clean, Fuel pump is new, Timing is good.

I would like to change the Merc Carb out with the rochester 2bbl. Anyone tried this?

Otherwise I am looking for a used Merc Carb, that I can rebuild. Anyone know where I could find a used Merc Carb for an inline 140?

Accelerator pump! Happens allot on those engines. Check at a local auto parts store and make sure you tell them it is a marine application. Not to hard to install. Changing the accellerator pump would be a cheaper solution then a differant carb. I would go the less expensive way first.

Bob ;)

i'm with bob on that one, if you put an automotive carb on it you will have to run a line to the float bowl vent, the float bowl vent is inside the venturi on the auto carb, so when you hit some rough stuff it will slosh gas down the throat and stumble (flood) a lot, been there, done that.jim

Re: Mercarb 140 inline

Thanks guys, I think the problem is fixed. Or at least the problem was gone on my last outing. I did three things (1 at a time would be best, but it is difficult testing on the water).

1) I removed the metering rod assembly from the carb, and soaked them for about a day in lacquer thinner. And blew out all the passages with the air compressor.

2) I installed a new gasket for the metering rod assembly.

3) I removed the power valve assembly, and soaked that for a day in lacquer thinner.

Although, when I was cleaning these parts, I didn't see anything wrong (chunks of stuff coming out of any passages, leak paths in the gasket, etc.). In fact all these parts looked very clean for a 17yr old carb.

I still am very interested in used carb's and anyone with similar problems with this carb. Without knowing exactly where the problem was, it may come back.

Thanks for your input!
:D
