The best way to drain the oil is to make sure the outboard is vertical, do not start and warm up the oil, it takes about 30 minutes for the oil to drain back down to sump. After oil is drained, install plug back in a few threads, trim outboard up just past 45 degrees and let it sit there for about 5 minutes. Trim outboard back to vertical position and remove drain plug to catch residule oil. As far as the filter tie shop rags around base and remove, this will catch some of the oil. Remember on Verados the oil must be drained before removing the gearcase and use only the Verado oil and Filters.
