the book states to read tdc with a dial indicator then back counterclockwise past .464 a quater turn then back to the .464 mark or on the flywheel then reset the pointer ? is the only thing you use the dial indicator for is finding the tdc ? if i use the dial and go .464 the .464 does not line up any close to the pointer. or can i do this find the tdc then line up the 0 mark on the flywheel ? the book jumps from reading the dial to reading the flywheel decal inthe same sentance . im lost can any one help ?

I will try. The dial indicater is only used to find top dead center. You have to find TDC clockwise and counter clockwise, because of the rock position of the crank, which is the crank will move a few degrees and the piston will not move. After you find TDC in both directions split the numbers of degrees and you have true TDC.

Additionally, the .464 mark is used to make sure the pointer is positioned correctly. If you are talking about a 115 Merc (that I am familiar with) the pointer is bolted down, and slightly adjustable. The instructions help you make sure the pointer is positioned correctly, so when you use you timing light everything is right-on.

Regards, Gold Bear :)
