merc stern drive, is it the right one?

Just want to say you all know how to have FUN! I've been monitoring. 1974 IMP W/188 hp sb ford, s/n #3836201 poss a mod 225? 888? 225s? not sure. the out drive is merc s/n#4339157 the other decal says 165. opps. is it possibile to attach the V8 to the 165? is 165 the power rating or gear ratio? is it poss to utlize a 165 upper unit case when rebuilding? I paid 500 for this. 4 new tires on the trailer, rebuilt outdrive, (never been in the water) ,new uphl and a 302 that pressure tested ok. the logs were the source of h2o in the oil. are these things possibile, oh yea,,plenty of grease too, better than none' give me your thoughts. steve

You've got a Mod.1 drive...<br />or "R" drive.<br />or "Pre-Alpha".<br />All the Same...........<br /><br />It Might have 1.65/1 gears.....<br />or 1.84/1s.......<br />You Need 1.50/1s................<br />otherwise, you'll need a Really Tall Prop.........

Commander, (of the grease)? Bondo, thanks for your reply..really, do you suppose that this 165 case is a part used to replace what should have been on there origionaly? is the Mod.1 adaquate for this 302? I'll figure out the gear ratios later today or tommorow. <br />w/ it being spring time thank you for taking the time answering my questions, you could be doing somthing else.....sl

Most of these drives are Very interchangeable......<br />As well as the Parts of them.......<br />The Mod.1 is a good drive capable of 275/300hp.......<br />It'll Last Longer if you Don't Beat it.....<br />Good Luck............<br /><br /> "(of the grease)?" <br />I'm a Mechanic...............<br />Some times fellas will go On + On about Which grease goes Where......<br />Every day I see that my tag line is in fact, a Fact..............

Bondo, yes, Grease is good! Thanks again. I removed the outdrive counted the input / output shaft reveloutions. came to about 1: 1.70. so I figured 165 must be gear ratios. I'll get it exact when i open it up. Iam still trying to get my NAPA marine catalog. I won't quit till I get one!

The 1.65:1 ratio came standard with the following motors... 165, 488, 898 and 200/5.0L. The 888 came with 1.50:1. So you have a slightly high reduction, 10% the be exact. Nothing to worry about. I also agree with Bondo's tag line.....

achris60, Itried to send a private message to you but could't find the 'buddy list'. to say thank you for the Technical Information. I see that this is what you do and in the area you live sounds like it could be a passion enjoy the down under thankyou again. How do I decern what model I am working on (ie. 888, 225 225s etc)?

The 888 was a Ford 302 with a 2bbl carb from 1972 to 1976, the 225 was a 327 GM from 1963 to 1969 and a Ford 302 with a 4bbl carb from 1973 to 1974 and 225S was also a Ford with a 4bbl carb from 1973 to 1974. Haven't managed to work out the difference between 225 and 225S, it may have been just a gear ratio difference.<br /><br />Chris........

this project I am currently attached to has the 4bbl. type 225S gear raitio perhaps. poss "power stering"?<br />I recieved a marine parts catalouge the type "R" outdrive is listed. I'd a been awhile trying to figure this out if not for Bondo and your's help. thankyou..sl
