I did read over section 4 and am a little unclear. Is this an easy job to do at home for only the the shift cable bellow? It is the only one showing cracking.

Can someone sum it up real simple. I know I have to reomve the drive which is very easy, but after that I don;t recall what it looks like.

Re: Merc shift cable bellows.

I did the job just recently and didn't even bother to remove the drive.

Just turn the steering hard to port and lock it there. Disconnect the lower shift cable at the shift plate. Loosen the 2 grub screws in the shift cable guide (long black thing) and remove that. Undo the locknut and remove the tube on the end of the shift cable. Tie and tape a piece of line (fishing line, cord, anything not too big) onto the end of the shift cable and, from the outside of the boat, pull it through and out from the gimbal ring. Replace the bellows and reverse the process, using the line to pull it back through. (Add a little dish-washing liquid to the end of the cable so it slides in the new bellows without hurting it.)

20 minutes, job done, and no leg pull... :D:D:D

Re: Merc shift cable bellows.

If I do opt to pull the drive, becuase I need to grease it anyways, can I do the whole job outside the boat? I get a little fuzzy when I ready this:

"Disconnect the lower shift cable at the shift plate. Loosen the 2 grub screws in the shift cable guide (long black thing) and remove that. Undo the locknut and remove the tube on the end of the shift cable. Tie and tape a piece of line (fishing line, cord, anything not too big) onto the end of the shift cable and, from the outside of the boat, pull it through and out from the gimbal ring"

The book really does not show any of this. I wish it did because I have been able to do everything else.

You need to remove all the stuff on the end of the cable in order to pull it out though the transom housing, and push it back in through the new bellows.

NO OTHER WAY to do it.....

I don't know which manual you're reading because the ones I have all detail exactly how to do the job, including pictures. :D:D
